MANUAL THERAPY

Manual therapy is treatment that involves skilled physiotherapy hand techniques to reduce pain and swelling, and to improve range of motion and mobility. A wide range of techniques are used, including:

  • joint mobilizations & manipulations

  • muscle energy technique

  • active release technique

  • myofascial cupping

  • massage

  • neural mobilizations

An evidence-based treatment plan, specific to your needs, is devised according to a thorough initial assessment and subsequent re-assessments each visit.

ELECTROTHERAPY

Different electrical modalities can be used in conjunction with manual therapy, education and exercise to optimize your recovery. Available options include:

  • ultrasound

  • interferential therapy

  • high voltage galvanism

  • muscle stimulation

  • TENS

These devices are used to help reduce pain and swelling, stimulate muscle activity and promote tissue healing.

TAPING/BRACING

Taping is used to reduce pain, control swelling and provide care for acute injuries. It is an effective support for hypermobile or unstable joints. Taping provides sensory input to help improve posture. It is often used along with other treatment techniques to assist in your return to a pain-free lifestyle.

Advice on various bracing options is provided and prosthetist referrals given, if needed to assist in your recovery.

EXERCISE THERAPY

Physiotherapists are specialists in the diagnosis of faulty movement patterns and the design of individualized exercise programs to correct those patterns. The programs are based on thorough assessments, and employ a combination of exercises that improve core stability, flexibility, strength, balance, and motor control.

PATIENT EDUCATION

Patient education on pain, posture, body mechanics and ergonomics are an integral part of treatment. A good understanding of pain has been shown to decrease pain and help patients better understand how to treat it. Advice on posture and body mechanics can prevent poor movement patterns from interfering with recovery. Knowledge is empowering; it enables the patient to take control of the healing process and gain independence.
